US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said he expected \u201cbumpy\u201d talks ahead with North Korea but that he still hoped to reach a potentially landmark denuclearisation deal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
US President Donald Trump in February cut \nshort a summit in Hanoi with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, with \nPyongyang later blaming Pompeo for pushing a hard line and calling for \nhis exclusion from future negotiations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cIt\u2019s going to be bumpy. \nIt\u2019s going to be challenging. I hope we get several more chances to have\n serious conversations about how we move this process forward,\u201d Pompeo \nsaid.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
North Korea has demanded an easing of sanctions and Trump \nhas indicated sympathy, saying he is fond of Kim.But Pompeo has insisted\n on maintaining pressure until a comprehensive deal on ending North \nKorea\u2019s nuclear programme.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Pompeo said years of previous \ndiplomatic efforts had made a mistake with North Korea by handing them \n\u201ca bunch of money in exchange for too little\u201d.\u201cWe\u2019re determined not to \nmake that mistake, and I think the North Koreans now see that pretty \nclearly,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Pompeo, who travelled to Pyongyang four times \nlast year, said he \u201cabsolutely\u201d believed that Kim was willing to take a \nmajor step to give up his nuclear weapons in return for less isolation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cOnly\n time will tell for sure, but I\u2019ve seen enough to believe that there is a\n real opportunity to fundamentally shift the strategic paradigm on the \npeninsula there.\u201d\n\n<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
