Pakistan will bring over 30,000 madrassas into the mainstream education system as part of a determined campaign to combat extremism, the military spokesperson said on Monday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Addressing a press conference in \nRawalpindi, Major General Asif Ghafoor said Pakistan had witnessed a \nsurge in religious seminaries from 247 madrassas in 1947 to 2,861 in \n1980.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cAnd now there are over 30,000 madrassas. Out of these, \nonly 100 are involved in propagating terrorism,\u201d he said, adding that \nseveral steps were afoot to control and bring the seminaries into the \nmainstream.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cAll madrassas will be brought under the Ministry of \nEducation so that contemporary subjects can be taught. We will formulate\n a syllabus which will not have hate speech and students will be taught \nrespect for different sects,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cIn February, money was \nallotted to bring the seminaries into the mainstream. To control the \nwelfare activities of proscribed organisations, the government has made a\n system to mainstream their social activities,\u201d Ghafoor said to bring \nthe madrassas into the mainstream they will have to start teaching other\n subjects so that students have skills other than religious studies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cWe\n will provide these funds so that these madrassas are mainstreamed and \nall of our children have equal opportunities,\u201d he said.\u201cThe \nmainstreaming has three phases. The first is to prepare a Bill which \nwill be ready in around a month.
