North Korea\u2019s vice-foreign minister said on Tuesday the United States will face \u201cundesired consequences\u201d if it fails to present a new position in denuclearisation talks by the end of the year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
North Korean \nleader Kim Jong Un has set a year-end deadline for the United States to \nshow more flexibility after his second summit with President Donald \nTrump failed to produce a deal to end Pyongyang\u2019s nuclear programme in \nreturn for sanctions relief.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
North Korean Vice-Foreign Minister \nChoe Son Hui singled out a Pompeo interview last week with CBS in which \nhe said the US may have to \u201cchange paths\u201d if the negotiations break \ndown.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
She also said North Korea\u2019s determination to denuclearize \nremained unchanged. It would happen \u201cwhen the time comes,\u201d but only if \nthe United States changed its current calculations.\u201cWe know the path we \nwill take, but we\u2019re just hesitating to choose as we have set the \ndeadline for the United States,\u201d Choe said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The North had been \nseeking a deal to ease sanctions in exchange for dismantling some of its\n nuclear facilities, but Trump called for a \u201cbig deal\u201d in which \nsanctions would be lifted if Pyongyang handed over all its nuclear \nweapons to the United States.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
When asked about North Korea\u2019s \ncalls for him to be dropped from the talks, Pompeo reiterated on Monday \nthat he was still in charge of the U.S. negotiating team.\u201cThe president \ngets to decide that,\u201d he said in an interview with The Hill. \u201cWe don\u2019t \nget to decide who my counterpart is, and President Trump gets to decide \nwho will represent America.\u201d Trump has said he is open to a third summit\n with Kim, but has stressed that sanctions will remain in place.\n\n<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
