Masood Azhar \ndesignated a global terrorist, a major diplomatic victory for India as \nChina offers support on the Masood Azhar issue. China withdrew the \ntechnical hold it put in March on a resolution seeking Azhar’s \ndesignation as a global terrorist. France, the UK and the US had moved \nthe resolution in UN Security Council’s 1267 Al Qaeda Sanctions \nCommittee days after the Pulwama Attack.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In its listing, UNSC has\n found Masood Azhar as being associated with Al Qaida by participating \nin the financing, planning and facilitating of its terror activities as \nwell as recruiting for it. It has been established that Azhar’s terror \noutfit Jaish e Mohammed also has associations with Al Qaida. UNSC has \nalready listed JeM as a terrorist organization in Oct 2001.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Beijing\n on Tuesday hinted at this move saying that the vexed issue of \ndesignating Azhar as a global terrorist by the UN will be “properly \nresolved.\u201dChina had put a hold in March on a fresh proposal by the US, \nUK and France to impose a ban on the chief of the JeM which claimed \nresponsibility for the deadly Pulwama terror attack.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The proposal\n was the fourth such bid at the UN in the last 10 years to list Azhar as\n a global terrorist. In 2009, India had moved a proposal by itself to \ndesignate Azhar. In 2016 again India moved the proposal along with the \nP3 – the United States, the United Kingdom and France in the UN’s 1267 \nSanctions Committee to ban Azhar, also the mastermind of the attack on \nthe air base in Pathankot in January, 2016.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In 2017, the P3 \nnations moved a similar proposal again. However, on all occasions China,\n a veto-wielding permanent member of the Security Council, blocked \nIndia’s proposal from being adopted by the Sanctions Committee.\n\n<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
