Pakistan, obsessed with India as a perceived existential threat, has \u201ccreated terrorist groups to be a tool\u201d in its struggle against India, a former top American spymaster has said.Former CIA acting director Michael Morell, in a podcast discussion with Kurt Campbell and Rich Verma on Thursday, alleged that Pakistan is one of the most dangerous countries in the world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Campbell, the former Assistant Secretary of State \nfor East Asian Affairs and Verma, the former US Ambassador to India, now\n regularly host \u2018The Tealeaves\u2019 Podcast of the Asia Group.Morell who \nplayed a key role in the Abbottabad raid that killed Osama bin Laden — \nthe al-Qaeda chief and mastermind behind the September 11, 2001 \nterrorist attacks in the United States in a safe house in Pakistan, said\n that the population of this South Asian country is exploding, and the \ndemographics are awful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cThe economy\u2019s going nowhere. It simply \ncan\u2019t provide the jobs that need to be provided for the young people who\n are entering the labour force. The education system is literally \nbroken. I went to Pakistan more often than I went to any other country \nwhen I was deputy director,\u201d he said, referring to his impression about \nPakistan when he was the deputy head in the CIA during the Obama \nadministration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cWhat they don\u2019t realise is that it\u2019s impossible \nto keep those terrorist groups under control. And that eventually comes \nback to bite you. You know, I believe that Pakistan, at the end of the \nday, maybe the most dangerous country in the world,\u201d Morell said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
There\u2019s\n no wonder that many Pakistani parents send their kids to madrasa and \none knows what happens to a small percentage of the kids who go \nthere.\u201cThe extremism is growing from a societal perspective. It\u2019s \ngrowing within the military. So, it is not impossible, not tomorrow, not\n next week, not next year, but five years from now, 10 years from now \nthat you could have a color revolution, Arab spring style movement in \nthe streets of Islamabad that ends up with an extremist government there\n with nuclear weapons. That\u2019s what so scary,\u201d Morell said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cThey \nstill see India and, I think, for foreseeable future, will see India as \nan existential threat to the state of Pakistan. It\u2019s not, it\u2019s just not.\n India stopped focusing on Pakistan a long time ago. They\u2019re focusing on\n their economic future,\u201d he argued.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
But because the Pakistanis \nare so obsessed with this perceived existential threat, they\u2019ve both \norganised their society in order to protect themselves from that threat.\n So, they\u2019ve given an immense amount of power to the military, and much \nless power to the civilian government, he said.\n\n<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
