Pakistan\u2019s former military dictator Pervez Musharraf did not turn up for the treason trial against him on Thursday citing deteriorating health and a special court accepted his plea to postpone the hearing until after Ramazan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The former president\u2019s lawyer Salman Safdar, in an \napplication on behalf of Musharraf, stated that despite strong \nwillingness and eagerness to return to Pakistan, the life-threatening \nailments and medical complications have forced him not to appear before \nthe special court.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The 75-year-old former president also \napologised for not appearing before the court and requested it to \npostpone the hearing until the end of Ramazan, which falls on June \n4.\u201cMusharraf should be given an opportunity to appear so as to fulfil \nthe requisites of justice,\u201d Safdar said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The counsel further \nclarified that Musharraf was unable to speak and that he could not \nrespond to the questions in court without his client\u2019s assistance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The\n court also issued a notice to the government over a plea for acquittal \nof Musharraf in the case. A special court indicted Gen Musharraf for \nhigh treason in March 2014. The previous Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz \ngovernment had filed the treason case against Musharraf over the \nimposition of extra-constitutional emergency in November 2007.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Giving\n details of his ailments, the application stated that Musharraf is \nsuffering from cardiac amyloidosis, chronic kidney disease, excessive \nsomnolence, spinal injury and fracture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
It stressed that the \nformer president came to Pakistan on March 24, 2013, on his own free \nwill to face the Benazir Bhutto assassination case, judges\u2019 detention \ncase and Akbar Bugti case and that the high treason case was initiated \nsubsequent to his arrival in the country.The application highlighted \nthat Musharraf\u2019s absence from the trial court was not deliberate, wilful\n or an excuse to avoid the ongoing criminal proceedings, the report \nsaid.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In the light of genuine life-threatening illness and \npermission by the government to travel abroad for the treatment, he \nshould not be treated as fugitive or proclaimed offender as was declared\n through the special court\u2019s interim order of June 19, 2016, it said.\n\n<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
