In a widening confrontation between the Trump administration and congressional Democrats, the White House on Tuesday prohibited a former counsel from turning over documents to a House panel, the day after the treasury department refused to hand over the president\u2019s income tax records.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The\n White House told the House judiciary committee the documents it had \nsought from the former counsel Don Mcgahn were provided to him in \nconnection with \u201ccooperation with the special counsel\u2019s investigation \nand with clear understanding that the records remain subject to the \ncontrol of the White House. they implicate significant executive branch \nconfidentiality interests and executive privilege\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The panel \nshould redirect its request for these records to the White House for \nthem, Counsel Pat Cipollone wrote to Jerrold Nadler, chairman of the \nHouse judiciary committee.This was another block on request for \nwitnesses and records made by Democrats pertaining to their \ninvestigations being conducted by multiple committees of the House of \nRepresentatives, including a sweeping probe of alleged corruption, abuse\n of power and obstruction of justice.On Monday, US treasury secretary \nSteven Mnuchin refused to hand over Donald Trump\u2019s personal income tax \nand told the House ways and means committee its request for them did not\n \u201cserve a legitimate legislative purpose\u201d and releasing them could be a \nviolation of privacy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Also on Monday, attorney general William \nBarr refused to release an un-redacted version of special counsel Robert\n Mueller\u2019s report on Russian meddling. The House judiciary committee has\n scheduled a vote on Wednesday to forward a contempt of Congress \npetition against him to the full House.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The president, his three \nadult children and his businesses have filed lawsuits to prevent their \nbanks and long-time accountant from releasing financial records \nsubpoenaed by congressional committees in connection with their \ninvestigations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
President Trump has argued that he fully \ncooperated with Mueller\u2019s probe, allowed officials to give testimony and\n handed over records and now that its investigations found no evidence \nhe or any member of his campaign conspired with Russian meddling it was \ntime to move on.Democrats, however, are drilling down on obstruction of \njustice. Mueller had cited ten episodes of potential obstruction of \njustice but did not find enough evidence to establish the offence. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
