Prime Minister Theresa May reiterated the British government\u2019s \u2018deep regret\u2019 for the 1919 Jallianwala Bagh massacre at a Vaisakhi event in 10, Downing Street on Wednesday, calling it a \u201cshameful scar on British Indian history\u201d.Several Vaisakhi processions were held in April in places such as Southall, Gravesend, Coventry, Leeds, Nottingham and Leicester. \u201cNo one \nwho has heard the accounts of what happened that day can fail to be \ndeeply moved. No one can truly imagine what the visitors to those \ngardens went through that day one hundred years ago\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cIt was as\n the former Prime Minister H.H. Asquith described it at the time \u2018one of\n the worst outrages in the whole of our history\u2019. Jallianwala Bagh is a \nshameful scar on British Indian history. We deeply regret what happened \nand the pain inflicted on so many people\u201d, she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The May \ngovernment resisted several demands in India and the UK for an official \napology during the centenary of the Jallianwala Bagh massacre on April \n13, but the prime minister expressed \u2018deep regret\u2019 inside and outside \nparliament.She said during the community event in Downing Street \u201c2019 \nmarks the 550th anniversary of the birth of Guru Nanak, the first Sikh \nguru, in 1469 But 2019 also marks the centenary of an appalling event \nthe Jallianwala Bagh massacre\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
May noted that on the day of the \ncentenary, Dominic Asquith, the British High Commissioner and H.H. \nAsquith\u2019s grandson, visited Jallianwala Bagh and laid a wreath on behalf\n of the whole country.The relationship with the Sikh community \u201cis one \nwe cherish greatly with collaboration and partnership at its heart\u201d, May\n said, adding that the Downing Street event was an opportunity to thank \nthose present and Sikhs across the UK for their \u201cbrilliant contribution\u201d\n to the UK.\n\n<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
