Amit Mehta, an Indian-American judge, will fast-track a decision on President Donald Trumps bid to quash a subpoena for financial records from his accounting firm, saying he will decide the full case after a hearing on May 14.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cThe sole question before the court – Is the \nHouse Oversight Committee\u2019s issuance of a subpoena to Mazars USA LLP for\n financial records of President Donald Trump and various associated \nentities a valid exercise of legislative power is fully briefed, and the\n court can discern no benefit from an additional round of legal \narguments,\u201d Mehta said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Mehta of the District Court for the \nDistrict of Columbia, made his announcement on Thursday in a brief \nnotice after receiving a first round of written arguments in the case, \nreports The Washington Post.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The lawsuit was brought April 22 by \nTrump and several of his businesses against House Oversight Committee \nChairman Elijah E. Cummings and the President\u2019s accounting firm, Mazars \nUSA.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Cummings\u2019s panel last month subpoenaed Mazars seeking \ndocuments to corroborate testimony of the President\u2019s former lawyer \nMichael Cohen, who said at a congressional hearing that Trump \nintentionally mis-reported the value of his assets for personal gain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The\n House Financial Services and Intelligence Committees are also \ninvestigating the President\u2019s finances and have delivered subpoenas to \nDeutsche Bank, Capitol One and other major banks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In suing the \nHouse as well as his banks and Mazars, Trump\u2019s lawyers argued the \nPresident\u2019s past personal dealings were irrelevant to the legislative \nbranch\u2019s fundamental duty of writing bills.\n\n<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
