Russian President Vladimir Putin on Tuesday meets US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo in the highest-level talks between the rival powers in nearly a year as they see if they can make headway on a raft of disagreements from Venezuela to Iran to arms control.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Pompeo is the \nhighest-ranking US official to see Putin since July when Trump met him \nin Helsinki and stunned the US political class by appearing to accept \nthe Russian leader\u2019s statement at face value that he did not meddle in \nthe US election.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Pompeo will visit Putin in the Black Sea resort \nof Sochi less than two weeks after President Donald Trump voiced \noptimism about improving relations with Moscow during a more than \none-hour telephone conversation with the Russian leader.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The \nrenewed diplomacy followed the long-awaited report in the United States \nby investigator Robert Mueller which found that Russia interfered in the\n 2016 election but that the Trump campaign did not collude with Moscow, \npartially lifting a cloud that had hung over the mogul-turned-president \nfor two years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Trump on Monday announced that he expected a \u201cvery\n fruitful meeting\u201d with Putin and Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping at the \nG20 summit in Japan, only for Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov to deny \nWashington had requested such a meeting and say there were \u201cno \nagreements so far\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Trump\u2019s enthusiasm for courting Putin has \nlittle support in Washington, even within his own administration, which \nhas kept up a campaign of pressure, including sanctions on Russia over \nalleged election meddling and Moscow\u2019s support for armed separatists in \nUkraine.\n\n<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
