US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo has said the United States does not seek a war with Iran, amid rapidly growing tensions between the two countries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Amid \nrising tensions between US and Iran over nuclear deal, US Secretary of \nState Mike Pompeo said US does not want war with Iran. Speaking in \nRussia, Pompeo said the US was looking for Iran to behave like a “normal\n country” but would respond if its interests were attacked.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Last \nweek, the US deployed warships and warplanes to the Gulf. Tensions \nescalated even further after an incident with four tankers off the \nUnited Arab Emirates on Sunday, with US investigators reportedly \nbelieving Iran or groups it supports were involved.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Meanwhile, \nIran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has also said there will be\n no war with the US. Pompeo, who held talks with Russia’s Foreign \nMinister Sergei Lavrov in the Russian city of Sochi, said the US \n“fundamentally” did not seek a conflict with Iran.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Pompeo said \n“We have also made clear to the Iranians that if American interests are \nattacked, we will most certainly respond in an appropriate fashion.”In \nremarks carried on state media and on his Twitter account, Ayatollah Ali\n Khamenei repeated Tehran’s position that it would not negotiate with \nthe US on a nuclear deal to replace the one President Donald Trump \nwithdrew from last year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
But Khamenei said: “We don’t seek a war,\n nor do they.” On Monday, President Hassan Rouhani told a meeting with \nclerics that Iran was “too great to be intimidated by anyone”, saying: \n“God willing we will pass this difficult period with glory and our heads\n held high, and defeat the enemy.”\n\n<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
