Croatian World Cupper Igor Stimac was on Wednesday appointed head coach of the Indian football team for a two-year term.The national team has been without a coach since the departure of Stephen Constantine in January, following the creditable show at the AFC Asian Cup.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He also \nplayed a pivotal role in developing the likes of Dario Srna, Daniel \nSubasic, Ivan Strinic, Kovacic, Perisic, and other players. The \ncentre-back has made 53 appearances for the national team.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
As a \nplayer, he was part the of the Croatia team that finished third in the \n1998 World Cup, and a member of the national squad which qualified for \nthe quarterfinals of the UEFA European Championship 1996 in England.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The\n 51-year-old Stimac, who was part of Croatia\u2019s 1998 World Cup squad that\n finished third in France, comes with an experience of over 18 years in \ncoaching, structuring, and developing football and players back home, \nand internationally.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
As a coach, Stimac\u2019s major achievement was \nguiding Croatia to qualify for the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil. During\n his tenure as the national coach of Croatia, he handed debuts to the \nlikes of Mateo Kovacic, Ante Rebic, Alen Halilovic, and Ivan Perisic, \namongst others.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Welcoming Stimac to Indian football, AIFF \npresident Praful Patel said, \u201cIgor is the right candidate to coach the \nBlue Tigers. I welcome him on board. Indian football is going through a \ntransition, and I am confident his vast experience will guide us to \nhigher echelons.\u201dGeneral secretary Kushal Das added, \u201cIndian football \nwould benefit immensely under Igor Stimac.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cHis credentials as a \ncoach and experience as a player are sure to add immense value to the \nplayers, and the Indian football ecosystem. The momentum gained needs to\n be sustained.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
