President Donald Trump has granted a full pardon to Conrad Black, a former newspaper publisher who has written a flattering political biography of Trump.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Black\u2019s media empire once included the Chicago Sun-Times \nand The Daily Telegraph of London. He was convicted of fraud in 2007 and\n spent three and a half years in prison. An appeals court reversed two \nconvictions, but left two others in place.White House press secretary \nSarah Sanders said Black \u201chas made tremendous contributions to business,\n and to political and historical thought.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cHe \ncould not have been more gracious and quickly got to his point: he was \ngranting me a full pardon,\u201d wrote Black, who used much of the rest of \nthe column to explain the case.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He called it a long ordeal that \nwas \u201cnever anything but a confluence of unlucky events, the belligerence\n of several corporate governance charlatans, and grandstanding local and\n American judges, all fanned by an unusually frenzied international \nmedia showing exceptional interest in the case because I was a media \nowner.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n
A former member of the British House of Lords, he \nwas sentenced to more than six years in prison after his 2007 conviction\n in Chicago, but was released on bail two years later to pursue an \nappeal that was partially successful. A judge reduced his sentence to \nthree years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Sanders said Black is the author of several notable \nbiographies, including volumes on Presidents Franklin D Roosevelt and \nRichard Nixon, but she did not mention his book about Trump.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
She \nsaid Black\u2019s case attracted broad support from many high-profile \nindividuals including former Secretary of State Henry Kissinger, Elton \nJohn and Rush Limbaugh who have \u201cvigorously vouched for his exceptional \ncharacter.\u201dTrump on Wednesday also pardoned Patrick Nolan, a former \nRepublican leader of the California State Assembly.\n\n<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
