\nFacing mounting pressure to announce departure date, Prime Minister \nTheresa May and an influential committee of the Conservative party on \nThursday agreed she would announce a timetable to resign in early June.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The\n decision on her departure was made during a \u2018very frank\u2019 meeting \nbetween May and the so-called 1922 Committee, following intense pressure\n on her either to resign or face the prospect of being forced to quit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The\n decision is seen as a temporary reprieve for May, whose authority has \nbeen curbed within the cabinet as well as the party in recent months. \nContenders have been openly jockeying for her position, particularly \nafter the party suffered serious setbacks in the recent local elections.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Irrespective\n of the Brexit withdrawal bill being passed or voted down again in early\n June, May will set out the timetable to resign, according to Graham \nBrady, chairman of the committee. The process is now underway even \nthough no firm date of her resignation has been agreed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He said \nin a statement: \u201cThe prime minister is determined to secure our \ndeparture from the European Union and is devoting her efforts to \nsecuring the 2nd reading of the withdrawal agreement bill in the week \ncommencing 3rd June 2019 and the passage of that bill and the consequent\n departure of the United Kingdom from the European Union by the summer\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cWe\n have agreed that she and I will meet following the 2nd reading of the \nbill to agree a timetable for the election of a new leader of the \nConservative and Unionist party\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
