U.S. Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin defied a congressional subpoena seeking six years of President Donald Trump\u2019s tax returns on Friday, all but guaranteeing a federal court battle with Congress over the records.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In\n a widely expected move, Mnuchin rejected a demand for the documents \nfrom House Ways and Means Committee Chairman Richard Neal, saying the \npanel lacks \u201ca legitimate legislative purpose\u201d for obtaining the tax \nrecords that Democrats view as critical to their efforts to investigate \nTrump and his presidency.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cWe are unable to provide the requested\n information in response to the committee\u2019s subpoena,\u201d Mnuchin said in a\n letter to Neal, released ahead of a 5 p.m. EDT deadline for delivering \nthe documents.Neal later issued a statement, saying he was \u201cconsulting \nwith counsel on how best to enforce the subpoenas moving forward.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Hours\n earlier, the Democratic chairman had said he was inclined to turn to \nfederal court to obtain Trump\u2019s tax returns, if the administration \nmissed the deadline. \u201cWe will likely proceed to court as quickly as next\n week,\u201d Neal had told reporters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
