May\n was forced to turn to Labour after the EU withdrawal agreement was \nvoted down thrice in the House of Commons, including by a large section \nof rebels in her own party. There was much uneasiness on both sides when\n the talks began.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
there are some areas where compromise has been \npossible, we have been unable to bridge important policy gaps between \nus. Even more crucially, the increasing weakness and instability of your\n government means there cannot be confidence in securing whatever might \nbe agreed between us\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Labour, Corbyn wrote, is concerned the May\n government\u2019s ability to deliver on any compromise agreement, noting \nthat cabinet ministers have been \u2018competing\u2019 to succeed May and the \ngovernment\u2019s authority \u2018eroded\u2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Besides the fundamental \ndifferences in the two sides\u2019 positions, a key concern for Labour was \nengaging in talks when there was no guarantee that any consensus would \nbe honoured by the successor of May, who is due to resign in the near \nfuture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn wrote to May: \u201cI am writing \nto let you know that I believe the talks between us about finding a \ncompromise agreement on leaving the European Union have now gone as far \nas they can\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
May has announced plans to re-introduce the \nwithdrawal bill in the week beginning June 3. Conservative rebels and \nothers have already announced their intention to vote against it again, \nsince nothing has changed since the last time it was defeated in the \nHouse of Commons.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
