Kamala Harris, the first Indian-origin Senator castigated President Donald Trump\u2019s merit-based immigration plan saying it was \u201cshort-sighted\u201d and invoked her unique background as a Democratic candidate for the White House in 2020\u00a0 being the daughter of an Indian immigrant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Trump \non Thursday rolled out the system that would prioritise high-skilled \nworkers over those who already have relatives in the country when \ndetermining who receives green cards.Harris, Senator from California, \ncriticised the proposal, which Democratic leaders have vowed to fight, \nsaying that Americans routinely celebrate a \u201cunified culture\u201d and the US\n Constitution guarantees equality for all people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
On the plan\u2019s \nintention to award immigrants certain points based on education or \nskills, Harris said, \u201cWe cannot allow people to start parsing and \npointing fingers and creating hierarchies among immigrants.\u201d \u201cThe beauty\n of the tradition of our country has been to say, when you walk through \nthe door, you are equal. We spoke those words in 1776, \u2018we are all \nequal\u2019 and should be treated that way. Not, oh well, if you come from \nthis place, you might only have a certain number of points, and if you \ncome from that place you might have a different number of points.\u201d \nAsians have historically immigrated as family units, Harris pointed out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
At\n an event hosted by an Asian American group, One APIA Nevada, Harris \ndove into her barrier-breaking election to the US Senate as the first \nSouth Asian to serve in the body\u2019s history. She acknowledged her \npresidential run as a biracial woman helping to shatter notions about \nbeing black, Asian and a woman.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The first South Asian-American US\n senator in history her mother is Indian, her father is Jamaican Harris \nsaid breaking barriers was more than about personal achievement as she \neyed becoming the first woman commander in chief.\u201cIt\u2019s about making a \nstatement about who can do what and redefining images about who can do \nwhat and how they do it,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Trump and others have \n\u201cperverted\u201d the issue of immigration, Harris added, as she echoed her \ncall for pathway to citizenship.
