The Maharashtra Cabinet on Friday gave its approval to promulgate an ordinance to amend the Socially and Educationally Backward Classes Reservation Act, 2018, to provide reservation to Maratha students in post-graduate medical courses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Nagpur Bench of the Bombay \nHigh Court had disallowed to grant 16 per cent reservation to Maratha \ncommunity for admissions to post graduate medical courses on the grounds\n that the admission process had begun much earlier.The Supreme Court had\n upheld the high court\u2019s decision.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Talking to reporters after the\n Cabinet meeting, Revenue Minister Chandrakant Patil said the draft of \nthe ordinance is being sent to the Governor for promulgation.The Cabinet\n also gave its approval to reimburse the fees to the candidates from the\n general category, who will be affected following the promulgation of \nthe ordinance.A minister said the general category students can seek \nadmission under management quota in private colleges.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cThe \nordinance will provide relief to those students who had already got \nadmission under Maratha quota, but were affected after the process was \nstayed by the court. Now, the third round of the admission would start,\u201d\n he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Those students from the general category, who will be \naffected, should try for admissions in private colleges and the \ngovernment will reimburse their fees, he said.The students from \nopen\/general category should seek management quota and the government \nwill assist them, Patil added.According to him, the state government \nwill approach the Supreme Court to extend the admission time frame from \nMay 25 to 31.\u201cWe will also seek additional 213 seats in the medical \ncourses,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
A meeting has been scheduled on May 21 on this\n issue, the minister said, adding that demand from other states is also \nbeing addressed to. \u201cWe will move the court to seek reservation be \nappliedfor the additional seats,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The minister also said\n the state government will file caveats in the Bombay High Court and its\n Aurangabad and Nagpur benches and the apex court to ensure the \nordinance is not challenged.Meanwhile, a statement from the Chief \nMinister\u2019s Office said the Cabinet also reviewed the drought situation, \nEl Nino effect, weather-related predictions, water storage in various \ndams, fodder availability and seeds stock.\n\n<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
