A riot at a prison in Tajikistan has left 32 people dead, including 24 members of the Islamic State militant group and three guards, authorities said Monday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Five\n of the inmates and the three guards were killed by IS prisoners during \nthe riot that erupted on Sunday evening, the justice ministry said in a \nstatement. The prison in Vakhdat, 17 kilometres east of the capital \nDushanbe, holds 1,500 inmates.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
It said the prisoners first \nstabbed to death three guards, and then five other inmates “in order to \nintimidate” the others. They then took other prisoners hostage before \nopening fire on the jail’s medical facilities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“Following a \nreprisal operation, 24 members of this group were killed and 25 others \narrested. The hostages were freed” and calm restored to the prison, the \nstatement said. Among the leaders of the riot, the Tajik authorities \nidentified the 20-year-old son of the former head of Tajik special \nforces who became a member of the IS leadership in Syria, where he was \nkilled in September 2017.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In November 2018, another riot claimed \nby IS left 26 people dead in Khujand, a city of 700,000 people in the \nnortheast of the country. The riot had been initiated by a former IS \nmember seeking to spark a mass escape.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Tajikistan, a country of \n8.5 million people bordering Afghanistan, has suffered severe conflict \nsince it gained independence after the collapse of the Soviet Union in \n1991. Tens of thousands of people were killed in the country during a \nfive-year civil war in the 1990s when rebel groups including Islamists \nrose up against the government.
