{"id":62253,"date":"2019-05-27T12:11:19","date_gmt":"2019-05-27T12:11:19","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blastingskyhawk.com\/?p=62253"},"modified":"2019-05-27T12:11:20","modified_gmt":"2019-05-27T12:11:20","slug":"sudan-islamists-back-army-in-push-to-preserve-sharia","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blastingskyhawk.com\/english\/sudan-islamists-back-army-in-push-to-preserve-sharia\/","title":{"rendered":"Sudan Islamists back army in push to preserve Sharia"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>With talks suspended between protest leaders and Sudan\u2019s military over a transfer of power to civilian rule, Islamist movements are backing the army in the hope it will keep sharia law in place.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Islamist parties stayed on the sidelines during the months of nationwide protests that led to the April ouster of long time ruler Omar al-Bashir.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They have since not joined the protest alliance at loggerheads with the generals over the makeup of a new governing body, which would rule the country for a three-year transitional period.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But hundreds of Islamists have rallied in the capital in recent days, warning they would reject any deal that would exclude Sharia Islamic law from the country\u2019s political roadmap.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They have also backed the army\u2019s demands that the head of Sudan\u2019s new governing body be a military figure putting them at odds with protesters who want civilian rule.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe agree with that there will be a cabinet of civilian technocrats,\u201d said Hassan Rizk, deputy head of the Islamist Reform Now Movement, a breakaway group from the National Congress Party formerly led by Bashir.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cBut the sovereign council will be headed by the armed forces because there is a security problem.\u201d Bashir came to power in an Islamist-backed coup in 1989 and Sudanese legislation has since been underpinned by Islamic law.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Nusrat Al-Sharia chief Mohamed Ali Jazuli justified the rejection by Islamists of an \u201cultimatum\u201d put forward by the protesters.While the protest alliance could be a \u201cpartner in change\u201d, he said, it was not \u201cthe only leader of the revolution\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe revolution was not against ideology but against corruption and tyranny,\u201d he said.Tayeb Mustafa, who heads a coalition of conservative parties, said Islamists were opposed to the transition plan because it \u201cignored the application of Islamic law\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But the protest leaders have remained silent on whether sharia has a place in Sudan\u2019s future, arguing that their main concern is installing a civilian administration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ultraconservative preacher Abdelhay Yousef, a leader of the Nusrat Al-Sharia movement, drew large crowds Friday at a mosque in the capital\u2019s southern Jabra district.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Buses then transported worshippers to a courtyard outside Khartoum\u2019s presidential palace where they broke their daytime fast for the Muslim holy month of Ramadan before rallying against the roadmap.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The protest alliance \u201cstole the revolution in broad daylight\u201d, said Mustafa, whose 2020 coalition brings together Islamist groups, including the Popular Congress Party, a long-time ally of Bashir.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Analysts say Islamists\u2019 close ties to Bashir have made it difficult for them to join forces with protesters and their Alliance for Freedom and Change umbrella group.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s impossible to equate a party that has always been opposed to the regime with another side that was with the regime until its fall,\u201d said prominent Sudanese journalist Khaled Tijani.<\/p>\n<!-- AddThis Advanced Settings generic via filter on the_content --><!-- AddThis Share Buttons generic via filter on the_content -->","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>With talks suspended between protest leaders and Sudan\u2019s military over a transfer of power to civilian rule, Islamist movements are backing the army in the hope it will keep sharia law in place.
