One thing which has been a constant in the ongoing World Cup is the continuous booing which Steve Smith has received from the fans in England and Wales.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Be it the warm-up match against England or the\n tournament proper thereafter, Smith has been given a tough time by the \nfans across all venues.And on Sunday, it was no different. Smith was \nconstantly booed by Indian fans during the World Cup fixture between \nIndia and Australia at the Oval which the Men in Blue won by 36 runs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Kohli,\n who was fielding at mid-wicket then, looked up and made a folded-hand \nsign, before asking them to cut it out again.Speaking about it in the \npost-match press conference, Kohli expressed his sympathy for Smith and \napologised on behalf of the Indian crowd.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cJust because there are\n so many Indian fans here, I just didn\u2019t want them to set a bad example,\n to be honest, because he didn\u2019t do anything to be booed in my opinion,\u201d\n the 30-year-old said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Smith, who was the captain during the \nball-tampering controversy last year, was first booed, with chants of \n\u201ccheater, cheater\u201d, making the rounds while he was fielding at third man\n during the Indian innings. All-rounder Hardik Pandya had just been \ndismissed, and the crowd tried to get under Smith\u2019s skin with the \nchants.
Indian skipper Virat Kohli, who was batting at the time, \nlooked up towards that section of the stadium and gestured them not to \ndo so. He instead made a \u201cclap\u201d gesture and pointed towards Smith. The \nIndian skipper also did the same when Smith walked past, with both \nplayers shaking hands.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Smith was booed for the second time when \nhe walked out to bat during Australia\u2019s big chase of 353. Another \nsection of the crowd this time booed and started the same chants again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cHe\u2019s\n just playing cricket. He was just standing there, and I felt bad \nbecause if I was in a position where something had happened with me and I\n had apologised, I accepted it and I came back and still I would get \nbooed, I wouldn\u2019t like it, either.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cSo I just felt for him, and I\n told him, I\u2019m sorry on behalf of the crowd because I\u2019ve seen that \nhappen in a few earlier games, as well, and in my opinion that\u2019s not \nacceptable,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Smith and David Warner have been \nrepeatedly heckled on the field since their return to the Australian \nteam following their one-year bans over the Newlands ball-tampering \nincident.\u201cLook, I think what\u2019s happened has happened like long back, the\n guy is back, he\u2019s trying to play well for his side.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
