Opposition leader in Pakistan\u2019s Punjab Assembly Hamza Shehbaz was arrested on Tuesday outside the Lahore High Court by the officials of the country\u2019s anti-graft body in cases related to money laundering and corruption.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The\n arrest took place after a two-member Lahore High Court Bench dismissed \nbail applications filed by Hamza, 44, after his lawyer opted to withdraw\n the pleas in two corruption cases.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The supporters of both PML-N \nand Pakistan Peoples Party held demonstrations in Lahore and other parts\n of Punjab province against the arrest of their top leaders.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The \nopposition says the arrests of its top leadership will not stop it from \nlaunching a movement against the government that has failed to deliver \non every front and is making the lives of Pakistanis miserable.
Pakistan\n Muslim League Nawaz vice president is under investigation by the \nNational Accountability Bureau in the Ramzan Sugar Mills, Saaf Paani \nproject and assets beyond known means of income cases.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cI will \nquit politics if it is proven that I was involved in corrupt practices,\u201d\n said Hamza whose father is also facing corruption cases but he is out \non bail.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The lawyers are also gearing up for launching a drive \nagainst the government for sending references against two \u2018upright\u2019 \njudges for possessing off-shore properties.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Supreme Court Bar Association has given a country-wide protest call against the government\u2019s action on June 14.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
On\n April 5, the accountability watchdog had failed in its bid to arrest \nHamza in a case of money laundering and owning assets beyond means as \nit faced strong resistance from the Sharif family\u2019s security men as well\n as PML-N supporters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
According to sources privy to NAB\u2019s \ninvestigation, the illegally accumulated assets are worth Rs 85 billion \nto Rs 100 billion and were bought during Shebaz\u2019s tenure as the Punjab \nchief minister.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In the Ramzan Sugar Mills corruption case, \nShehbaz and his son Hamza are accused of \u201cfraudulently and dishonestly\u201d \ncausing a Rs 213 million loss to the national exchequer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Shehbaz was arrested by the National Accountability Bureau in October 2018 and released on bail on February 14.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
His\n brother and three-time Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif has been serving a \nseven-year prison term at Kot Lakhpat Jail in Lahore since December 24, \n2018 when an accountability court convicted him in one of the three \ncorruption cases filed in the wake of the apex court\u2019s July 28, 2017 \norder in Panama Papers case.\n\n<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
