A huge brown scar \non the hillside marked where the deluge of mud descended on Thae Pyar \nKone village in Mon state on Friday, wiping out 16 homes and a \nmonastery.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Search and rescue teams worked through the night \ntrying to find survivors and recover bodies from the deep sludge. “So \nfar we have found 22 bodies and 47 injured people,” said local \nadministrator Myo Min Tun.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Officials believe up to 100 people \ncould still be missing. Aerial pictures showed broken remnants of \nrooftops and other debris from the houses strewn next to trucks knocked \nover by the force of the mudslide.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Rescue workers spent Saturday \nmorning loading bodies wrapped in plastic onto the back of flatbed \ntrucks as worried villagers looked on.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Emergency crews had to unblock the main highway from Yangon to Mawlamyine, buried under six feet of sludge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Torrential downpours have burst riverbanks across the country while coastal communities have been warned of higher tides.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In\n the town of Shwegyin in eastern Bago region, residents waded out \nthrough waist-deep waters or waited to be rescued by boat after the \nSittaung river burst its banks, swallowing entire homes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Around \n89,000 people have been displaced by floods in recent weeks, although \nmany have since been able to return home, according to the UN’s Office \nfor the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Vietnam has also \nexperienced heavy flooding this week with at least eight people killed \nin the country’s central highlands and rescuers using a zip line to \ncarry dozens of others to safety.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
