Iran\u2019s President Hassan Rouhani announced Sunday a \u201cbudget of resistance\u201d against US sanctions targeting the country\u2019s vital oil sector, backed by a $5 billion Russian investment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Rouhani said the aim was to reduce \u201chardships\u201d in Iran where a shock fuel price hike last month triggered nationwide demonstrations that turned deadly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
After unilaterally withdrawing from a 2015 nuclear deal between Iran and world powers in May last year, the US began imposing sanctions on Tehran, including on oil exports, which it aims to squeeze to zero in a campaign of \u201cmaximum pressure\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cWe know that under the situation of sanctions and pressure, people are in hardship. We know people\u2019s purchasing power has declined,\u201d he said.The budget would benefit from a $5 billion \u201cinvestment\u201d from Russia which was still being finalised, said Rouhani.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cWe hope that $5 billion in capital will enter the country, either through plans that have already been finalised or which will be finalised next year,\u201d he said.Iran and Russia have strengthened ties in recent years, with both backing President Bashar al-Assad in Syria\u2019s civil war.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Rouhani told lawmakers the budget, which includes a 15-percent public sector wage hike, \u201cis a budget of resistance and perseverance against sanctions\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He said the fiscal plan came in response to the \u201cmaximum pressure and continuation of America\u2019s sanctions\u201d and vowed it would signal \u201cto the world that, despite sanctions, we will manage the country, especially in terms of oil\u201d.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
