President Donald Trump warned Sunday that North Korea\u2019s Kim Jong Un had \u201ceverything\u201d to lose through hostility towards the United States, after Pyongyang said it had carried out a major new weapons test.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cKim Jong Un is too smart and has far too much to lose, everything actually, if he acts in a hostile way,\u201d Trump tweeted in response to the unspecified test at the Sohae space launch center.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The pair have met three times since June 2018 but with little progress towards denuclearization. Pyongyang has set Washington a December 31 deadline to make new concessions to kickstart stalled talks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cNorth Korea, under the leadership of Kim Jong Un, has tremendous economic potential, but it must denuclearize as promised,\u201d Trump tweeted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The announcement of Saturday\u2019s test came just hours after Trump said he would be \u201csurprised\u201d by any hostile action from the North, emphasizing his \u201cvery good relationship\u201d with Kim.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Trump and Kim engaged in months of mutual insults and threats of devastation in 2017, sending tensions soaring before a diplomatic rapprochement the following year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Writing that Kim had \u201csigned a strong Denuclearization Agreement\u201d at their June 2018 summit in Singapore,\u201d Trump warned: \u201cHe does not want to void his special relationship with the President of the United States or interfere with the U.S. Presidential Election in November.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cKim Jong Un promised to denuclearize North Korea,\u201d O\u2019Brien said. \u201cAnd we expect him to live up to the promise he made at the summit in Singapore. And we hope he\u2019ll do so.\u201dOn Saturday, South Korea\u2019s President Moon Jae-in spoke by phone with Trump and agreed to maintain dialogue with Pyongyang.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
