I apologise for the bad example given yesterday,\u201d the head of the Catholic church said before celebrating Mass at the Vatican.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Francis had greeted children before the Nativity scene on Saint Peter\u2019s square and was turning away when the woman who had crossed herself then cried out something, pulled on his hand and almost caused him to fall.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He continued his tour, walking with some difficulty while maintaining a slightly greater distance from visitors, and gradually relaxed again as he came into contact with other children.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In his first Mass of the New Year, the pontiff later denounced \u201call violence against women\u201d as \u201ca profanation of God, born of a woman\u201d.<br>\nFrancis also said women were \u201cthe source of life\u201d but deplored that they were constantly \u201coffended, beaten, abused and forced into prostitution\u201d and forced to \u201csuppress the life they carry within\u201d them.<\/p>\n<!-- AddThis Advanced Settings generic via filter on the_content --><!-- AddThis Share Buttons generic via filter on the_content -->","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Pope Francis apologised Wednesday for his widely-viewed slap of a woman who had grabbed his hand as he greeted Catholic faithful on New Year\u2019s Eve. \u201cIt happens to me too.
