President Donald Trump declared Monday that his predecessor Barack Obama\u2019s signature reform and expansion of the US health insurance system is defunct, after he cut subsidies to insurers.<\/p>\n
\u201cObamacare is finished. It\u2019s dead. It\u2019s gone,\u201d he told reporters.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s gone. There is no such thing as Obamacare anymore. It is — and I said this years ago — it\u2019s a concept that couldn\u2019t have worked. In its best days it couldn\u2019t have worked.\u201d<\/p>\n
Since becoming president in January Trump has persistently sought to end Obama\u2019s Affordable Care Act, cutting back some government budgetary support and pressing Congress to repeal and replace it.<\/p>\n
The effort in Congress though has failed, last week forcing Trump to order an end to the \u201ccost-sharing reduction\u201d program, payments to insurers designed to help millions of lower income Americans afford coverage.<\/p>\n
\u201cI knocked out the CSRs; that was a subsidy to the insurance companies. That was a gift,\u201d Trump said.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe insurance companies have made an absolute fortune with Obamacare,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
But he said that, to protect people who will lose their insurance, the White House is working with Congress for \u201csome kind of a short-term fix\u201d before coming up with a longer term plan.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
