Going further than he ever has in expressing regret over Obama administration immigration policy, presidential candidate Joe Biden called it a \u201cbig mistake\u201d to have deported hundreds of thousands of people without criminal records.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In written statements included as part of Biden\u2019s proposed immigration overhaul, the campaign already had acknowledged \u201cpain\u201d surrounding deportations that occurred when he served as President Barack Obama\u2019s vice president. But the candidate himself had not so clearly stated his personal regrets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Biden emphasized to Ramos his proposals to expand legal immigration, bolster the asylum process and end construction of a U.S.-Mexico border wall. The project has been President Donald Trump\u2019s hallmark anti-immigration effort.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cThis is a big country,\u201d Biden told Ramos, dismissing \u201cthe idea we can\u2019t accommodate more people in the interest of the United States.\u201d He called \u201clegal as well as undocumented immigrants\u201d key contributors to the U.S. economy and society.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Ramos and Biden had a testy exchange during Democrats\u2019 September primary debate when the high-profile Latino journalist noted Obama\u2019s deportation record and asked Biden, \u201cWhy should Latinos trust you?\u201d Just as he did in September, Biden rejected any suggestion that Obama\u2019s record on immigration is commensurate to Trump\u2019s.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
When Ramos queried Biden this time on 3 million deportations, including an estimated 1.7 million people who had no criminal record, Biden initially pushed back by asserting that previous administrations had \u201cdeported twice as many people,\u201d a claim he could not support with federal data. Pressed again, Biden relented.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cIt was painful,\u201d Biden said. \u201cIt took too long. But we began to get it right with the DACA program,\u201d he continued, referring to Obama\u2019s executive order that granted legal status to immigrants who were brought to the United States illegally as children.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
