On February 17, actor Roopal Tyagi, slammed the industry in a long open letter on her Instagram. She said that the industry has a \u201chuge power to influence our society\u2026specifically the target audience\u201d but \u201cwhen are we going to stop faking it?\u201d. She adds, \u201c85% of our shows are downright regressive and portray \u201cTHE LEAD\u201d in bad light. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
You think you make a show about a \u201cdark\u201d skinned girl, a \u201cshort\u201d girl, a \u201cfat\u201d girl etc and about the problems they face and call it a progressive show. No. All that such shows are doing is instilling subliminally that these very normal basic physical characteristics of a woman\u2019s body are actually something to be ashamed of.\u201d She feels the industry should make a progressive show which go \u201cbeyond a woman\u2019s body\u201d and cast a dusky, short or a fat girl as the girl next door. \u201ccause that\u2019s how girls next door are! It\u2019s normal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Talking about her thought behind the message, Roopal says, \u201cIt was not a spur of the moment decision. I knew saying anything wasn\u2019t going to make a difference in anyone\u2019s life. Recently, when I met a young 15-16 girl who was called by a TV character\u2019s name, but I was appalled to know that they do so as like a TV character, she is dark and fat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Since she posted, Roopal admits that she has been pleasantly surprised to have received positive response from not only her peers but even creative and producers from the TV industry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Roopal feels in films and ads \u201creal faces\u201d are being cast but TV is lagging behind and needs to catch up fast. The Sapne Suhane Ladakpan Ke actor recalls that when she entered the industry, she was \u201cconstantly\u201d told that she wasn\u2019t good enough.\u201cI was told to get a nose job and cheek job done to look better.
