The Nationalist Congress Party and the Shiv Sena, which are coalition partners in Maharashtra\u2019s Maha Vikas Aghadi government, are locked in a tussle over introducing a 5 per cent reservation in educational institutions for the Muslim community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Minority Affairs minister Nawab Malik, who belongs to the NCP, to told the Maharashtra Assembly that the coalition government was keen on introducing the 5 per cent quota in educational institutions for the Muslim community ahead of the next academic year beginning June.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201dThe Maharashtra government will take appropriate action before admissions to schools begin,\u201d Malik said in response to a question by Congress legislator Sharad Ranpise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Later, Shiv Sena\u2019s Minister Eknath Shinde told reporters outside the state legislature that no decision on bringing about legislation for the Muslim community has been taken. \u201cLeaders of the MVA will meet and take a call in introducing reservations for any particular community. So far, no decision has been taken,\u201d Shinde told reporters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Congress and the NCP were pushing for legislation to introduce reservations for Muslims during the Budget session, according to sources. Though leaders of the two parties had a meeting with Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray last month, the matter did not go forward.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The two parties want reservation for the Muslims to be in addition to those earmarked for scheduled castes and tribes, economically weaker sections and socially and economically backward castes.Congress and the NCP leaders wanted quotas for Muslims in educational institutions on the lines of reservations given to the Maratha community.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
