The United States is \u201ctotally prepared\u201d to respond to threats from Pyongyang, US President Donald Trump said in an interview aired Sunday, while also emphasizing his \u201cexceptional relationship\u201d with China\u2019s leader.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe\u2019re so prepared like you wouldn\u2019t believe,\u201d Trump told the Fox News program Sunday Morning Futures while discussing tensions with North Korea, which have soared over Pyongyang\u2019s nuclear program.<\/p>\n
\u201cYou would be shocked to see how totally prepared we are if we need to be,\u201d said Trump, who has in recent months engaged in a fiery verbal tit-for-tat with North Korea\u2019s leader.<\/p>\n
\u201cWould it be nice not to do that? The answer is yes,\u201d Trump went on, appearing to allude to potential conflict.<\/p>\n
\u201cWill that happen? Who knows,\u201d the US president said.<\/p>\n
The North has drawn international ire in recent months for conducting a sixth nuclear test and tests of long-range missiles capable of striking the US mainland.<\/p>\n
Asked about US policy towards China, the North\u2019s longtime ally, Trump praised Beijing for \u201chelping\u201d the US by enforcing sanctions against Pyongyang.<\/p>\n
\u201cHe\u2019s for China. And I\u2019m for the US,\u201d he said of Chinese President Xi Jinping. \u201cBut we do have a very good — I would say an exceptional relationship. And China\u2019s really helping us. With respect to North Korea.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cChina is big stuff,\u201d he added, saying Xi has \u201cgot the power to do something very significant with respect to North Korea.\u201d<\/p>\n
