Tabu doesn\u2019t really want to do an interview over the phone. Stuck in traffic somewhere in Mumbai, the 45-year-old actor would rather chat than answer inane questions about her choice of roles, hobbies, her singlehood, and so on. \u201cI\u2019ve been answering the same damn questions for years. Ask me something interesting, yaar, it\u2019ll make my day,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n
This reporter must now change tack, so I bring up the last time I saw her \u2014 at Mountain Echoes, the literature festival in Thimphu, Bhutan, last year. Tabu\u2019s presence had made grown, sometimes elderly, men\u2019s hearts flutter; even Pico Iyer, he, who speaks with such eloquence and poise, stumbled, when the session was opened to questions from the audience. At this particular memory, Tabu laughs, full throated and robust. \u201cAre you going to write all this in the introduction? You must. Why do you want to write the way the world wants? You should have your own take,\u201d she says, adding, \u201cYou know, all this attention from older men is probably the Cheeni Kum (2007) effect.\u201d<\/p>\n
Since Chandni Bar (2001), cinegoers consider Tabu \u201cthe thinking person\u2019s actor\u201d, a tag she\u2019s happy to embrace. \u201cMain toh woh hoon hi! I\u2019m very happy that people think so, because so many of my heavy roles were unintentional. But what does it mean exactly? Do they consider themselves thinkers, or I\u2019m an actor who thinks? But how do they know that for sure,\u201d she says, and chuckles.<\/p>\n
So, Tabu\u2019s latest release, Golmaal Again, is not a film most of her fans would associate her with, but it has already become the second highest-grossing film in Bollywood this year. \u201cIt\u2019s actually a serious role. The film is from my perspective, I\u2019m narrating the story, and I\u2019m not in Golmaal team\u2019s comic space at all. For some time now, I\u2019ve wanted to be a part of an established and successful franchise, to be a part of something so big \u2014 I wanted that experience. I had reached out to Rohit Shetty before, and this time, he had something for me. Ajay (Devgn) is an old friend, and I knew the rest of them, so it was fun,\u201d she says.

Tabu\u2019s friendship with Devgn goes back to a time before numerology erased a letter from his last name. In 1994, they starred in Vijaypath, and they\u2019ve done five films together, \u201csix if you count Fitoor (2016),\u201d she says. \u201cWhat I like about him the most is that his core hasn\u2019t changed, what formed the basis of our friendship has stayed the same. I think it takes a lot for somebody to be so consistent in this industry,\u201d says Tabu, who is known for staying away from the Bollywood social scene. \u201cI show up for the Diwali parties,\u201d she says, laconically.<\/p>\n
For long, Bollywood has considered Tabu a bit of a recluse, and while she hasn\u2019t actively contributed to her mystique, that viewpoint has offered her a way to be free of any expectations the industry might have once had of her. Tabu is only on Instagram because she likes taking pictures. \u201cTabutiful\u201d is a woman who loves dogs, Roger Federer, Tintin, and happens to be an actor who appears in several magazine shoots. \u201cI like saying something through an image, I am interested in photography. It\u2019s not in my temperament to converse with so many people at the same time. So, I like to post pictures I\u2019ve taken, and maybe some selfies too, because there\u2019s no pressure to engage,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n
During the course of our conversation, Tabu describes herself as \u201ca little non-cinema\u201d and as somebody who does not necessarily think about films as art or entertainment. \u201cI\u2019m not all that passionate about cinema, I\u2019m not a student of the form. I want to do my work well, and that\u2019s the only relationship I have with the craft.
