1 dead, 25 hurt in Kolkata bridge collapse

In West Bengal, at least one person was killed while 25 others injured when a portion of the arterial Majerhat bridge in south Kolkata collapsed on Tuesday evening, trapping several people and crushing many vehicles.

The 40-year-old bridge in the crowded Alipore area caved in during rush hour over rail tracks.

Train movement was temporarily suspended on the Majerhat road after the bridge collapse.

The Railway Ministry, however, said the maintenance of the collapsed portion of the bridge was not under railway jurisdiction.

President Ram Nath Kovind expressed his concern in a tweet. He said, “Sorry to learn of the partial collapse of the Majerhat bridge in Kolkata. Thoughts and prayers with the bereaved families, and with
those injured in the tragic incident.”

Prime Minister Narendra Modi in his tweet termed the incident as “deeply unfortunate” and hoped for the speedy recovery of the injured.

Home minister Rajnath Singh spoke to Chief Minister Mamata Bannerjee about the incident.
