17 dead in blaze at firecracker storage unit in Delhi’s Bawana; CM announces ex-gratia

At least 17 people have been killed and two injured in a massive blaze at a firecracker storage unit in outer Delhi’s Bawana industrial area last evening.

The fire, which started at the storage unit on the ground floor of a two-storey building, ripped through the structure.

10 women and seven men were killed, while a man and woman were injured in the incident.

An FIR has been registered under various sections of IPC relating to culpable homicide not amounting to murder, and negligent conduct with respect to fire or combustible material.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has expressed anguish at the death of people in the fire.

Prime Minister said he was “deeply anguished” by the accident. “My thoughts are with the families of those who lost their lives. May those who are injured recover quickly,” .

Meanwhile, The Delhi government has ordered an inquiry into the blaze. Police also apprehended the owner of the factory in connection with fire accident.

Delhi Chief Minister visited the spot and announced an ex-gratia of Rs. five lakh to the kin of those killed and Rs one lakh each to the two injured persons.
