6 Gurdaspur devotees die as jeep rolls down gorge

Six devotees from Gurdaspur district in Punjab were killed while nine others injured when the jeep, they were travelling in, skidded off the road and fell 40 feet deep into a gorge in Nehrian village of Amb on Monday.

DSP Manoj Jamwal said of the six killed, four were women. They stayed at the holy shrine of Baba Badbhag Singh in Mairi village near Nehrian on Sunday night and paid obeisance this morning. They reportedly began their return journey to Gurdaspur around 8.30 am.

Just a few kilometres from the shrine, the vehicle rolled off the road. There were 16 passengers in the vehicle which had the capacity to carry only eight. According to a passenger, the driver reportedly had an epileptic seizure before losing control of the vehicle. The DSP said the victims were carried to the road with the help of locals. Only three deceased persons had been identified. They are Surinder Singh (45), a resident of Salowal village, Hardeep Singh (25), a resident of Udham Singh Nagar, and Kashmir Kaur (50), a resident of Bolewal village of Batala tehsil. All three belonged to Gurdaspur district.

Four injured persons have been admitted to the District Hospital, while five others, who received minor injuries, were receiving treatment at the Community Health Centre, Amb. Chintpurni MLA Balbir Chaudhary assured the injured proper medical care.
