Five Indians enter quarters

Guwahati,
India enjoyed an all-win day at the AIBA Women’s Youth World Boxing Championships with five of the country’s pugilists advancing to the quarterfinals after contrasting victories here today.

The fast-rising Ankushita Boro (64kg) led the charge with a facile win over Turkey’s Aluc Cagla, putting on an aggressive performance. Ankushita is a silver medallist from the Balkan Youth International Boxing Championship and the International Ahmet Comert Tournament.

“She beat me in her country, so it was only natural that I return the favour in my own country,” Ankushita said.

Also advancing to the quarterfinals are Shashi Chopra (57kg), Jyoti Gulia (51kg), Neetu (48kg) and Sakshi Choudhary (54kg). They join Astha Pahwa (69kg), who entered the quarterfinals on Monday.

Jyoti, who opened the proceedings for India on Tuesday, defeated Ukraine’s Anastasiia Lisinska. Shashi stunned second seed Lin Li Wei-Yi of Chinese Taipei.

In the evening session, Neetu — the Balkan Youth International Championship gold-medallist and the reigning national champion — out-witted Bulgaria’s Emi-Mari Todorova in her pre-quarterfinal bout.

“It was an easy bout for me. I had beaten her earlier in Bulgaria too and I knew how to tackle her,” Neetu said. “She didn’t allow me to move freely in the first round. My coach changed the strategy midway and that made all the difference.”

Sakshi upstaged fourth seed Indira Shudabaeva of Russia in a split verdict.
