PAU HONOURS RENOWNED HOCKEY PLAYER, S. HARINDER SINGH BHULLAR

The Hockey Club of Punjab Agricultural University (PAU), Dr Kesho Ram Sharma Society and PAU Teachers’ Association (PAUTA) organized a function to honour the reputed former hockey player and coach, S. Harinder Singh Bhullar. On the occasion, officials, scientists and former players of PAU were present. Dr (Mrs) R.K. Dhaliwal, Director Students’ Welfare, PAU, was the chief guest while Dr Satyavan Rampal, Director Students’ Welfare, Guru Angad Dev Veterinary and Animal Sciences University (GADVASU) was the special guest.

Dr Dhaliwal said, “PAU has produced great sports persons at the national level including three Hockey Olympians.” She lauded S. Bhullar for being a guiding light for the PAU hockey team, which at present is one of the best teams.

Dr Rampal said many science students have carved a niche for themselves in the field of sports after making their start at the University playgrounds.

Prof. Gurbhajan Gill, former President, Punjabi Sahit Akademi and former Editor (Punjabi), PAU, highlighted the importance of coaches like S. Bhullar in guiding and boosting the young players and carving their bright future in sports.

On the occasion, a tem minute documentary film on the life of S. Bhullar, prepared by Dr Anil Sharma, Assistant Director (TV), was shown to the gathering. The film highlighted S. Bhullar as a great hockey player and his contributions as a coach to more than 25 players of Rajwinder Singh Indian Hockey Team, Prem Lata Mahajan Indian Hockey Team, Yadvinder Singh Deol Indian Hockey Team, CP Chingeppa Indian Hockey Team and Olympian Ramandeep Singh. S. Bhullar has served at PAU for 36 years and acquired trainings from the hockey legends, Major Dhyan Chand and Bal Krishan.

Dr V.S. Hans, President of the Hockey Club and Estate Officer, PAU, while welcoming S. Bhullar, said a documentary film on the accomplishments of S. Bhullar has earlier also been prepared by the students residing in Australia. In future, functions in Canada and USA are going to be organized by the alumni of PAU to honour S. Bhullar, he informed.

Dr Rakesh Sharda, President, PAUTA, while proposing the vote of thanks, lauded the students for remembering their guru, S. Bhullar.

During the function, Dr Simrat Sagar, Dean PGS, GADVASU; Kundal Lal Chawla, former Zonal Manager, IFFCO; Paramjit Singh Gill, Olympian; P.S. Bhogal, owner of Bhogal Industries; Harbans Singh, Coordinator, Sports Authority of India; Amar Singh, former District Sports Officer and Ranjit Singh Rana, an ardent admirer of music, were also present.
