After representing India at the Nobel Peace Prize ceremony at Oslo in Norway from December 8 to 12, Dr Surinder Singh Soodan today said it was a lifetime opportunity for him to be part of the event.

He expressed happiness over his association with the International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons (ICAN), which received Nobel Peace Prize for 2017, and said it was an honour for him to represent the country at the international level.

Addressing a press conference at Press Club here today, Dr SS Soodan said he was the incumbent president of the Indian Doctors for Peace and Development (IDPD), an affiliate of the International Physicians for Peace and Development (IPPNW), which was the main sponsor of ICAN.

“ICAN was awarded Nobel Peace Prize on December 10 by the King and Queen of Norway at Peace Hall, Oslo, which he attended. ICAN was given the honour for raising awareness about the humanitarian consequences of nuclear weapons and for promoting the United Nations General Assembly approved treaty prohibiting nuclear weapons from the face of the earth. Despite opposition from many nuclear powers, ICAN and IPPNW are working to free the world of nuclear weapons,” Dr Soodan said.
