WESTERN COMMAND CELEBRATES VIJAY DIWAS-2017
Chandigarh: VIJAY DIWAS celebrated at Headquarters Western Command on 16 Dec 2017 with full military grandeur and dignity. To commemorate this historic, occasion, a solemn “Wreath Laying Ceremony” was held at the “Veer Smriti” at Headquarters Western Command. At another solemn ceremony at Chandimandir tributes were paid to 2Lt Arun Khetrapal, He laid down his life on this day in the Indo-Pak war of 1971.Lt Gen Surinder Singh, GOC-in-C Western Command and all ranks of Western Command and a large number of veterans and serving soldiers laid wreath in honour of valiant martyrs and paid homage to them.
16 Dec is a golden letter day for the Armed Forces and the Nation. The day is celebrated to commemorate the spectacular victory achieved by the Indian Armed Forces in the 1971 Indo-Pak war. On 16 Dec 1971 General A.A.K.Niazi, the commander of Pakistan Armed Forces surrendered his forces to Lt Gen Jagjit Singh Aurora, the Allied Force Commander which resulted in the creation of Bangladesh..
Notable amongst the veterans were some brave and valiant heroes who fought the 1971 war. Brigadier Kuldip Singh Chandpuri,
Lt Gen GS Sihota, Air Marshal MM Singh, Col HS Dhaliwal paid their respects to the martyrs. The Western Command salutes all heroes of 1971 operations on this great day.
