PAU CELEBRATES DHIYAN DI LOHRI
LUDHIANA,
The College of Home Science, PAU, celebrated the festival of lohri at Begowal village under Rural Agricultural Work Experience (RAWE) programme. Dedicated to the girl child under the theme “Dhiyan di Lohri,” nearly 250 women and children attended the celebration. Bon fire was lit at the centre of the venue and visitors were welcomed by the students.
Discussing the declined sex ratio in the Punjab state, Dr Kanwljit Kaur, Incharge of the programme, highlighted the significance of celebrating lohri for girl child. She said the birth of girl child is also a matter of celebration as she is the one who sustains the society. Dr Kaur stressed on the audience to pledge to make village Begowal free from female foeticide and dowry as these are a big curse for the society.
Two students recited Gurbhajan Gill’s poetry ”Lori” and Shri Peshora Singh poetry “Je putar Haatante nahin milde”, which were appreciated by the audience. The main attraction of the programme was skit “Dhee daat hai, Durkaar nahi,” enacted by the students in which they displayed the achievements of girls in different walks of life.
On the occasion, girls less than one year of age were honoured by the Sarpanch, Mrs Tejinder Kaur with gifts. Dr Sukhdeep Kaur, Incharge of the programme, thanked the villagers and students for their support and cooperation in making this programme a success.
