Taiwan hit by 6.4-magnitude quake
A 6.4-magnitude earthquake jolted waters near Hualien County in northeast Taiwan at 21:56 Sunday, according to the China Earthquake Networks Center
(CENC).
The epicenter was monitored at 24.2 degrees north latitude and 121.72 degrees east longitude, with a depth of 10 km, the center said in a renewed statement.
A 5.6-magnitude quake had previously been reported by the center.
A 5.5-magnitude aftershock was reported at 22:13 in the same region, the center said in another statement. The center earlier said that a 4.7-magnitude
earthquake was monitored at 21:12 in the same area. Taiwan’s meteorological authority confirmed that a series of earthquakes hit Hualien, with the strongest
measured at 5.8.
The first quake took place at 21:12 and was followed by at least six aftershocks. Local residents in Hualien said they had clearly felt the quakes at home, while
local media sources reported that the quakes affected four trains.
No casualties have been reported. The tremors were also felt in parts of east China’s Fujian Province.
