Navjot Kaur clinches gold in the Asian Wrestling

Navjot Kaur clinched India’s first gold medal at the Asian Wrestling Championships in Kyrgyzstan. She beat Miyu Imai of Japan 9-1 in the final of the 65kg women’s category.

Bronze medallist at the Rio Olympics, Sakshi Malik won the bronze medal in the 62kg women’s category match by beating Ayaulym Kassymova of Kazakhstan by 10-7.

With one gold, two silver and one bronze medal, India were at the second spot in the medal tally.

Earlier on Thursday, Vinesh Phogat lost a close bout to settle for a silver medal at the Asian Wrestling Championships in Kyrgyzstan. Vinesh suffered a 2-3 defeat to China’s Chun Lei in the summit clash of the women’s 50kg freestyle event.

After trailing 0-1 early in the bout, Vinesh came back strongly to score two points, taking the lead.

But with less than two minutes left, the Chinese wrestler scored two crucial points with an attacking move to regain the lead, which she defended well till the end.
