Enraged over discontinuation of garbage lifting, BJP councillors gheraoed the Municipal Commissioner at his office here today. The Commissioner assured them that the garbage would be lifted within two or three days.

Unhygienic conditions have obtained in the city as sweepers are on strike for the last 15 days. Heaps of garbage can be seen by roadside in every ward of the city, markets and main roads of the city. Some of the areas have been badly affected due to non-lifting of garbage. Vacant plots have turned into virtual dumping grounds.

BJP councillors Lokesh Nagroo, Surender Garg, Ashok Kataria, Harish Sharma, Raju Telwala, husband of Deputy Mayor Seema Pahwa; Sanjeev Dahiya and two nominated BJP councillors Manoj Sharma and Tarun Chhokra reached the MC office in the morning. They held a meeting with Commissioner Shiv Prasad Sharma and urged him to address the problem at the earliest.

Nagroo said, “The Commissioner assured us that the garbage piled up in the city would be lifted in the next two days. A new agency has started lifting garbage in the city”.

The Commissioner also assured them that garbage lifting would continue even during night. Road sweeping during night would also be started, he added.

The MC Commissioner said, “The situation in the city has worsened as the sweepers are on strike for the last 15 days”. Garbage lifting was completely stopped as around 325 regular sweepers along with 300 sweepers employed at the DC rate and 260 outsourced sweepers stopped working in support of 260 workers but now the matter has been resolved, he said.
