Two day informal WTO Ministerial Meet begins in New Delhi
Union Commerce Minister Suresh Prabhu on Monday met several global representatives who are in Delhi.
A 2-day informal World Trade Organisation Ministerial meet began in the national capital on Monday with the intent to forge cooperation.Representatives from
50 countries are participating in the meet.
The meet will provide an opportunity for free and frank discussions to representatives from several developed and developing countries.The meet is also
expected to help resolve several complex issues.Addressing the meet.WTO Director-General said the discussion is on with the US for reforming the institution.
The meet in Delhi has also gained significance because of the absence of ministerial guidance at the previous ministerial meet which took place in Argentina’s
Buenos Aires in December last year.The meet also gains significance as.
Union Commerce Minister Suresh Prabhu on Monday met several global representatives who are in Delhi. In the backdrop of the meet, WTO Director-General
also called on Prime Miniter Narendra Modi during the day.It is hoped that the mini-ministerial meet will pave the way for resolving several pending issues in the
global trading body by bringing members together.
The prime minister reiterated that India is a strong supporter of the multilateral trading system. He stated that it is imperative to prioritise the WTO’s activities so
that it addresses the concerns of developing countries.
Talking to reporters, Azevêdo said the mini-ministerial meeting will be useful for carrying forward the mandate of the multilateral trade body.
