Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday announced an ex gratia of Rs 10 lakh to the next of kin of each of the 39 Indians killed by the Islamic State in Mosul, Iraq, an official release said.

The announcement came after Congress MPs from Punjab staged a protest in Parliament demanding compensation for the families.

On Monday, Minister of State for External Affairs VK Singh had flown home with the remains of 38 of the 39 victims — 27 from Punjab, four from Himachal Pradesh, six from Bihar and two from West Bengal. Earlier, the Punjab Government had declared an ex gratia of Rs 5 lakh for each of the families and a job for a member.
