Johnny Depp sued by ex-bodyguards who reveal substance and weapons abuse

Hollywood star Johnny Depp’s ex-bodyguards are taking the actor to court. In a lawsuit filed in Los Angeles on Tuesday, the two men allege that Depp made them work in dangerous circumstances which exposed them to illegal substances and weapons, in addition to Depp not having paid them their due wages.

According to People.com, Eugene Arreola, a retired police detective, and Miguel Sanchez first joined Depp’s team in 2013, and over the course of their time with the movie star who is involved in a separate $25 million lawsuit by his former managers, behaved erratically and needed ‘protection’ from himself.

According to the complaint, the duo was hired as Depp’s personal in-house security team and “began to notice a stark change in Depp and the atmosphere on his Hollywood Hills compound.”

“Depp began making sudden and drastic changes to his staff and management team, causing a significant financial crunch for everyone surrounding Depp, except for Depp himself,” the complaint continued, noting that Depp was involved in a ‘financial hurricane’ at the time.

“psychological issues” may have led to his “compulsive spending disorder” which caused a heavy strain on his finances. According to that complaint, the star spent over $75 million (Rs 480 crore) in acquiring 14 residences around the world. The ex-managers also said that he bought 45 luxury vehicles, 70 collectible guitars and enough Hollywood memorabilia to fill 12 storage facilities.

Arreola and Sanchez meanwhile alleged that they often “found themselves in situations that required more than what a bodyguard would be expected to do.” They said that they were “asked repeatedly to drive vehicles that contained illegal substances” and “open containers” and “were asked to monitor unstable individuals in (Depp’s) life and entourage.”

They recalled an “incident at a local nightclub involved (Arreola and Sanchez) alerting Depp of illegal substances visible on his face and person while preventing onlookers from noticing Depp’s condition.”

In a separate incident, a member of Depp’s head of security accidentally shot himself on the star’s property.

They were also forced to give in to every whim of Depp’s children, for whom they became ‘de facto’ baby sitters. Depp’s youngest child is John Christopher Depp III, whom the star had with ex-partner, Vanessa Paradis.
