Launches works worth Rs 15,100 cr, says can’t afford delay in modernisation

Lashing out at the erstwhile UPA government led by the Congress, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said his government was fully committed to completing works in time and developing infrastructure to promote various fields, including health, tourism, agriculture and education.

Without naming the UPA government, Modi said in the past the governments used to delay projects that led to increase in the cost of construction manifold. “They just claimed publicity by announcing projects before polls. But BJP wants to change this. We have the capacity to complete projects in time-bound manner,” he said.

He said this here today while inaugurating and performing “bhoomi poojan” of national highway projects worth Rs15,100 crore in Udaipur. The PM inaugurated 12 projects worth Rs5,610 crore that were completed in three years and performed “bhoomi poojan” of projects worth Rs9, 490 crore to be started in various districts of the state.

The PM expressed happiness that his government had managed to complete highway projects in the state that had been pending for years together. Stressing upon the role of infrastructure in development, he said these highways would help farmers, boost tourism and open up economic opportunities for the locals. He said these highways would not only help link Rajasthan with other states more efficiently, but would also be gateways to progress.

“Infrastructure plays major role in development of the country. But generally, governments don’t take the projects that take long time to complete. But our government does not hesitate in taking up such projects as we have the capacity to complete them in time. For the country’s progress, change in the system is required. We need latest technology for power and other things,” he said. “Better roads help improve the transportation system and hence the economy. If roads are good, farmers can supply their produce to wholesale markets smoothly.”
