The Press Club of Jammu on Friday paid tributes to slain journalist Shujaat Bukhari who was shot dead by militants in Srinagar on Thursday evening. Two of his personal security officers were also killed in the terror attack.

Mediapersons observed a two-minute silence for the peace of the departed soul.

Remembering his days with Shujaat, Press Club of Jammu president Ashwani Kumar called the incident as unfortunate. He said it was an attack on the democracy. “He was a gentleman and a professional journalist,” Kumar said, adding that the attack had raised many eyebrows. He, however, called his killing a well-planned conspiracy.

Paying tributes, senior journalist Arun Joshi also remembered Shujaat and said it was a really shocking incident.

“Shujaat had launched a campaign against the drug mafia and was working on social issues as well,” he said, adding that his death had created a vacuum.

“Now, carrying forward his campaign against the drug mafia and working on social issues will be a real tribute to Shujaat,” Joshi added.

Another senior journalist and former president of the Press Club of Jammu Manu Shrivatsa, in his address, recalled Shujaat’s contribution to the field of journalism in J&K and said he was dedicated to his profession. Shrivatsa said mediapersons in J&K were facing pressure from various quarters due to the prevailing situation.
