Based on Supreme Court directions issued on July 17, the Centre has shot off a fresh advisory to states and Union Territories (UTs), asking them to effectively control incidents of mob violence and lynching.

In the advisory, which was sent on Monday, the Union Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has asked all states to appoint a Superintendent of Police (SP)-level officer in each district, set up a special task force for gathering intelligence and closely monitor social media contents, so that no one is attacked “on the suspicion of being child-lifter or cattle-smuggler”.

The states and UTs have also been advised to take strong punitive action against official concerned in the district administration if he/she fails to comply with the directions so as to prevent, investigate and facilitate expeditious trial of any case of mob violence and lynching. This must be considered as an act of deliberate negligence and misconduct, it added.
