Rewari varsity tries to ‘scuttle’ Tanwar’s visit tomorrow
Rewari
A row has erupted over Haryana Pradesh Congress Committee (HPCC) chief Ashok Tanwar’s proposed visit to Indira Gandhi University (IGU) here on August 2. The university authorities issued a notice against political activities on the campus.
“As per the instructions of the competent authority, it has been directed that no political activities are allowed on the campus,” states the notice signed by Romika Batra, Director Youth Welfare (DYW) of the university.
Sources say the notice was pasted on the board on Monday inviting flak from Tanwar’s supporters who are adamant on hosting the leader’s interaction with the students.
They said that if RSS, BJP and INLD leaders could participate in programmes on the campus, then why Tanwar is not being allowed.
One of them said Tanwar would visit the history department of the university on August 2 and interact with students as he has a PhD in history. There is nothing wrong if he talks to the students about their problems and other issues pertaining to them, he said.
“Tanwar’s visit is being opposed only because Assistant Professor (History) Balkar Singh is hosting a lunch for Tanwar at his official flat on the university campus after the interaction programme. Balkar was recently suspended after being booked on charges of house trespass and threatening the relatives of university Registrar Madan Lal at his residence in Rohtak on July 19,” he claimed.
Balkar Singh told The Tribune that Tanwar’s visit is not a political event. He has a doctorate in history and has been a prominent students’ leader. Hence, his interaction with students of the history department would work as guidance for them, but the university authorities were deliberately resisting his visit with mala fide intention, he alleged.
